London: William Mackenzie. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to.. Undated but c1873. Handsomely bound in contemporary threequarter maroon morocco and brown calf with gilt decoration along edges. Raised bands to spine with gilt decoration and title labels.One raised band on Vol III is loose. Edges and shoulders are worn and scuffed. Marbled endpapers and page edges. Pages are age-tanned with scattered foxing, especially to prelims. Occasional very small tears. Volume I: Notes, Critical and Explanatory by Samuel Neil, and The Comedies, Volume II: Tragedies, Volume III: HIstories. Illustrations by Sir John Gilbert, George Cruikshank and Robert Dudley. Each play has a full-page engraved frontispiece, there are numerous fine tipped in coloured plates, and wood engravings throughout. A fine set.
