Edinburgh / London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1881. [xviii], 457 pp, [xi], 489 pp, 8vo (8 7/8" H) - 2 volume set, rebound in red buckram with gilt lettering on spines, new endpapers. Tissue-covered frontispiece portrait, 16 maps/battle plans including: 8 fold-outs (General Map of India at rear of volume I), 6 full page and 2 small maps in text - all present. The military career of Colin Campbell, 1st Baron Clyde (1792-1863) from his participation in the Peninsular War, through the First Opium War, Second Anglo-Sikh War, Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. Volume I has a lean to the spine, a faint water stain at the top edge of the frontispiece as well as some very light soiling, a previous owner's initials in ink at the bottom of the title page, one or two pages have some minor fore-edge damage, two light separations between page gatherings but pages are holding firmly in the binding, the map at the rear of the book has a few tears repaired with old tape - there is also scattered foxing, very light browning in the margins of the pages and to the edges of the text block, small light to moderate foxing mark in the margin of some pages, a few pages with a narrow piece missing at the fore-edge due to rough opening of the page gatherings, some loss of paper of the headband. Volume II has some pages with light fore-edge wrinkling, one page with a corner crease, two fold-out maps with some archivally taped fold tears, heavy browning at the very top edge of page leaf 313/314, very light browning in the page margins and light browning to the edges of the text block. .
