Though not stated, we assume this is a first edition as we have found other copies but not any earlier ones. Considerable wear to the original cover, including including fading, chipping and small tears at edges and spine. Spine is wear but no splits detected. Pages are in better condition. They are whole - none are missing, no tears, relatively little spotting or foxing. Except for the steel engravings scattered throughout the book. These are heavily foxed. Pages are clean and easy to read. Print is a bit larger than normal size. The first dozen pages or so are stained around the bottom front edge of the page. Writing on the first fly-leaf page
