Hurst and Blackett, publishers, London, 1871. First Edition. Hardcover. Reading Copy/No Dust Jacket. combined weight, volume 1: -- XII, 300 pages, introduction by editor. Green coloured endpapers. Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece of William Berwick, which is protected by a tissue guard, which has become almost completely brown. Brown cloth covered boards with black decoration to the front panel with lack titles to the front panel and gilt titles to the backstrip. Both books are showing their age and wear. Volume 1:-- Heavy bumping, rubbing, fraying and slight discolouration to the backstrip edges and to the book corners. Underlying board is visible at the book corners. Heavy rubbing and marks to the book panels and there is a small split in the cloth of the rear spine gutter measuring 0.5 " , 2 inches from the lower backstrip edge. There is a white stain to the backstrip, 4 inches long. The book edges have been hand cut. A previous owner has over sewed the text block to the boards and the sewing is visible as is the underlying original webbing. The free front end paper has almost come away from the text block and at various points throughout the book the underlying webbing and sewing is visible. There is browning and foxing throughout the text. Volume 2: -- VIII, 262 pages, then 16 pages following further books from Hurst and Blackett, Publishers. Green coloured endpapers. Brown coloured cloth boards with black titles to the front panel and gilt titles to the backstrip. Heavy rubbing, chipping and fraying to the backstrip corners and to the book corners and book edges. Rubbing, marking and stains to the cloth of the book. Browning of the hand cut page edges. As with volume 1, a previous owner has over sewed the text block to the original book webbing and sewing can be seen. At various points throughout the book the underlying webbing and sewing can be seen, but is marginally less than volume 1. Browning and occasional foxing spot throughout the book. A 2-volume set on the life and letters of the 19th century artist William Berwick. In his work he was renowned for his treatment of natural history and genuineness of his other works of art.
