Four pages preceding title page contain publisher's advertisements (for all four publishers in the imprint) for this title, as well as Life in Paris, or The Rambles and Sprees, of Dick Wildfire, Squire Jenkins & Capt. O'Shuffleton. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper and inscription on front free endpaper indicating that this book was given to the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College in 1854 by Talbot Murray. First American edition. Checklist Amer. Imprints, 44147. British sportswriter Pierce Egan (1772-1849) was the author of Boxiana; or Sketches of Ancient and Modern Pugilism. Life in London first appeared as a monthly publication in 1821; it was notable for its reliance on fashionable slang. The great popularity of the work led to pirated versions, such as Life in Paris, advertised in this volume. In Very Good Condition: spine is faded; edges rubbed; head of spine slightly frayed; boards are stained;lacking blank leaf following front free endpaper; old dampstain along upper fore-edge of some leaves, not impacting text; light foxing; otherwise, clean and tight.
