"The real Jonathan Wild was truly great, in Fielding's ironic sens of the word. Moreover, he was entirely a self-made man whose extravagances soon led to his serving a four-year sentence in the Wood Street prison, where he was introduce to the London underworld: his true metier for his greatness as a purveyor of stolen goods. Even his greatness was not infallable, and in the end he was hung at Tyburn on May, 27, 1725. It may have been intended at first as a satire on Robert Walpole, one of the most corrupt politicians of the day, but it soon transcended it's original purpose. Not a biograpy of the great man, it is rather a novel suggested by his career.".
