Publisher's full red cloth, gilt lettering and decoration on cover and spine, bevelled boards, t.e.g., fore and bottom edges deckle, violet endpapers with gilt decoration. Profusely illustrated with tissue-protected photogravures at the beginning of each chapter, and hundreds of in-text illustrations. Sabine Baring-Gould (1834 1924) of Lew Trenchard in Devon, England, was an Anglican priest, hagiographer, antiquarian, biographer, novelist, folk song collector and eclectic scholar. He was regarded as one of the top ten novelists of his time, but wrote prolifically on his travels, religious matters, historical figures and on many other topics. Over 1200 publications are listed in his bibliography. He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being "Onward, Christian Soldiers", "Sing Lullaby", and "Now the Day Is Over". Professionally rebacked with original spine and endpapers laid on, marks from the removal of a bookplate on fep, gilt faded, covers rubbed, else fine, unmarked, tight, square, and clean.
