ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Frits W. Went is the son of one naturalist and the father of another. His youth was spent in Utrecht, Holland, where his father taught at the University's Botanical Gardens and Institute. In constant contact with botanists and plant research, he decided to take up the science himself. Soon after receiving his doctorate from Utrecht, Dr. Went moved to Indonesia to spend five years at the famous Botanical Gardens at Buitenzorg (Bogor), Java. In 1933 he came to the California Institute of Technology, where he became professor of plant physiology and remained until 1958. A pioneer in the field of plant hormones, Dr. Went has also been a student of environmental influences on plant growth. Over 15 years of work in both areas are summarized in his book The Experimental Control of Plant Growth. As Director of the Missouri Botanical Garden at St. Louis, he designed the Climatron - a climate-controlled display greenhouse where plants from a wide variety of habitats are under investigation. In 1963, he returned to research and teaching as Professor of Botany at Washington University, St. Louis. Since 1965, he has been Distinguished Professor of Botany at the University of Nevada and Head of the Desert Biology Laboratory of the Desert Research Institute. A member of the National Academy of Sciences and of many other scientific societies, Dr. Went has served as president of both the Botanical Society of America and the American Society of Plant Physiologists and is the author of more than 150 technical papers.
