This is a volume from the Time-Life Classics of the Old West series, and is a facsimile reprint of the 1854 edition published by Miller, Orton and Mulligan. Alonzo Delano was advised by his physician to seek a change of climate and life in the open air. Accordingly, Delano left for the gold fields by the overland route. His journey began in St Joseph in April of 1849. Delano arrived in Shasta County, California in September. The day to day incidents, set down in his diary, became the opening chapters of this book.
