Vol. 1: Engraved frontis portrait of Johnson. Long strip of leather missing from the spine.Rest of spine chipped and abraded as are tops of both covers. Marbled endpapers. These books have 1789 bookplates of the Reverend W. Barrow, LLD SAS. Both covers are attached, but literally by threads, The twine that is used to bind the book. The rest of the hinges are broken through. Vol.2: Light foxing in the first few pp. Front cover completely detached, but present. Vol. 3: Front cover hanging by a few threads, back cover a bit better. Has fold-out sample of Johnson's handwriting at back of book.
