The images of his driver's license grow larger and more important as he progresses from youth to old age. In his last years he refused to give up this iconic symbol of his independence. A shrunken old man now, he can barely see over the wheel of the car, but refuses to give up driving. He dies with that license in his wallet. In NY state, as long as an elderly person can read the eye chart, the State cannot refuse to renew his license regardless of his mental or physical condition."
