From that day onwards, when his outnumbered English army fought desperately and successfully for survival, the name of Henry V has rung through history as one of the great warrior heroes of the Middle Ages. His father had won the throne in a successful revolt against an unpopular tyrant, and Henry was to spend his boyhood in the field defending his inheritance. From this harsh upbringing he derived a devotion to military ideals which inspired his people to follow him gladly to war and which gave him the reputation of the most formidable warrior of his age.
