New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1934 No. 1 of the Dana Girls series. Jean and Louise Dana are given a valuable study lamp by their Uncle Ned. The girls plan to place it in their study room at Starhurst when they return for their sophomore year. But before the girls leave, the lamp is stolen! Refers to The Secret of the Jade Ring on front flap of DJ, refers to The Mystery of the Crossroads on the half title verso, refers to Nancy Drew's The Clue of the Velvet Mask on back of DJ. Condition notes: (viii), 215 numbered pp; HB w/DJ. Pages: clean, bright, tight, green topstain, decorative cream/green eps, frontis; b.e. slightly grubby. Cover: green tweed, dk green artwork and titles front/spine; lt shelfwear w/ sunning to edges, mild wear to extrems, and several small dark stains to front. DJ: unclipped, color artwork and yellow/white titles front/spine; substantial edge/shelfwear w/head a bit tattered, open tear and hole to rear joint and spine with loss of text, numerous poorly executed internal tape repairs, faint small "14" penciled to back. A decent copy.
Sinopsis
By the Light of the Study Lamp is the first book in The Dana Girls detective series, originally produced by the Stratemeyer Syndicate. It was issued in 1934, as part of a three-volume release in order to test the market for the series. Louise and Jean Dana, orphaned sisters, receive the gift of an antique study lamp as a parcel from their Uncle Ned Dana, skipper of the SS Balaska, as they are packing to return to their school for a second year.
