Indianapolis, Indiana: Eli Lilly & Company, 1891. First Edition. Softcover. Good. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy. Housed in a plastic sleeve, with some predictable soiling to and sunning of the front, printed, illustrated wraps. Slight discoloration of right margin, hardly affecting text. A quite bracing bulletin announcing the remedies for which Eli Lilly & Company products and services appear to be perfect. Laid in is a loose advert for "Liquor Ferri" (Lilly's Iron), a wet preparation of ferruginous tonic designed to cure everything. The bellwether essay, however, treats of correspondence between and eventual working relationship of the well-known obstetrician-gynecologist J. Marion Sims, and Dr. Rush Jones. It concerns the use of an allegedly hidden "traditional" treatment among Creek Indians for syphilis and whose precise formulation resided still in one Horace King and who communicated said formula to a "colored man" Lawson, enslaved by the plantation owner Mr. Nicholas D. Barnett. The preparation was made from the pulverised roots of a species (Stillingia sylvatica) eventually dubbed Succus Altans (McDade) after being added in preparation to five additional organic ingredients. The remainder of the Bulletin provides letters to the editor, correspondence between other medical men and chemists, and adoring public. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
