New York: Mysterious Bookshop, 2009. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. In the 2000s, New York City's Mysterious Bookshop, owned by Otto Penzler, published a series of stand-alone pamphlets with short essays by noted crime writers about the origin stories of their best-known characters. This set includes both the lettered (26 copies) and numbered (250 copies) issues of this collected volume of 22 of the essays (Michael Connelly's contribution is about Hieronymus Bosch).

These books are signed by Penzler as well as by each of the authors on a sheet bound in at the beginning of their essays. The contributors are Ken Bruen, Lee Child, Michael Connelly, John Connelly, Robert Crais, Jeffrey Deaver, Colin Dexter, John Harvey, Stephen Hunter, Faye Kellerman, Jonathan Kellerman, John Lescroart, Laura Lippman, David Morrell (about Rambo), Carol O'Connell, Robert B. Parker, Ridley Pearson, Anne Perry, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, Ian Rankin, and Alexander McCall Smith.

viii, 406 pages plus signature sheets. First editions. Lettered copy quarter bound in red leather over red marbled-paper-covered boards; numbered copy bound in blue leather and marbled paper. These are copies J and 49 signed by all the authors. Fine copies housed in a custom black-cloth clamshell box.
