London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1895. First Edition. Two octavo volumes. Publisher's red buckram with gilt spine titles; xii,[1]-634; xvi,[1]-495pp; frontispiece, facsimiles and text illustrations. Library stamps to endpapers and margin of v.1 Preface (withdrawn), but no other institutional markings; thin splits to hinges (internal); spines sunned, as usual; still a tight, attractive set, solidly VG. A. Edward Newton suggests that this title should be interpreted as "part of Wise's 'build-up' of [Wise's] forgeries, and goes on to recommend that it be read side-by-side with Pollard & Redgrave's "Enquiry" and Partington's Forging Ahead. Contains a wealth of anecdotal matter on 19th century literary figures and includes interesting, if not altogether trustworthy, bibliographies of Robert Browning and Swinburne; it also includes the first publication of Wise's forgeries of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, George Eliot, Swinburne, and others.
