Augsburg: Christoph Mang, 1615. First Latin edition. Small 8vo, pp.[viii], 294, folding plan of the villa in Peking converted into a church with Ricci's tomb. A very good copy bound in modern red morocco, all edges red. The Jesuit missionary Nicolas Trigault's Latin edition of two important annual letters from the Chinese missions for the years 1610 and 1611, which were first published in Italian at Rome the same year. The first letter provides a description of the Chinese political situation, the state of the missions, and reports from Beijing and Nanjing; the second has a general report on the mission and a special report from Nanjing. Trigault dedicated his Latin translation to Maximilian I (1573-1651), the Jesuit-educated Duke of Bavaria. This edition includes a folding plan of the villa in Peking which was converted into a church with Ricci's tomb, with detailed caption. Cordier BS 808; Löwendahl 56; Morrison II, p.466; De Backer & Sommervogel, 8, 238.

London: Thomas Harper, 1633. Thick square octavo, pp (6), 702, (66), printed in black letter. The title page is mounted and heavily restored from a much earlier time; it is age-toned and there is much staining of the surface, possibly from the glue used to repair ? The first few pages are fragile at the leading edge and lacking a few small pieces; the remaining pages are age-toned and occasionally slightly marked or stained, certainly used but overall quite sound with no tears or loss. Later calf with simple gilt decorated line, with some cracking and wear, fairly recently re-backed with a new calf spine, blind-stamped. Front and rear hinges cracked, but no weakness. The front endpaper has a tiny neat inscription dated 1917, and also the heraldic bookplate of Lady Violet Beaumont. [Second edition of this charming guide to herbal remedies with the plants "set down in order of the Alphabet, so that thou mayest without any difficulties finde them by the titles of the pages" ("To the… Leer más

London: B. Alsop & T. Fawcet, 1639. Calfskin. Good. Full original calf, with both fixed endpapers freed from the boards but still attached to the page block; the front hinge is now covered by the large bookplate of Hugh Cecil Lowther, Fifth Earl of Lonsdale, accompanied but not obscured by a small, penned note and the plate of Dallas oil giant John W. McReynolds; the binding is relaxed enough to show cords, but secure. Pages bear mild age-toning around the margins and light foxing at preliminaries and terminals, with only ghosts of decoration at block edges; chestnut leather bears an open pull sign at the spine head, only residue of the title plate, long scuffs at both shoulders and a shorter one at upper spine with some cracking and a tiny bore stopped along the spine, wear down to the follicles around the front board (less so on the rear) approaching exposure at free corners, mere score lines around board edges and across spine where once was gold, and a few stray, small ink spots and droplet… Leer más

There he dedicated himself to the study of the indigenous languages and became proficient in Otomi and then in Nahuatl. He was a friend of the Bishop and later Viceroy of New Spain, Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, as is documented by surviving letters written by Carochi to the bishop. Carochi had an acute understanding of the Nahuatl language and was the first grammarian to understand and propose a consistent transcription of two… Leer más

Descripción:
This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
This particularly edition of Claudian's poetry includes a life of Claudian written by Giglio (here identified as Lilio) Gregorious Giraldi (1479-1552) taken from his work on the… Leer más

This is a First edition thus of the "Quatrième Edition, revue & considérablement augmentée", printed in 1780. New articles are starred (*) to differentiate from those which had appeared in previous editions of this momumental work. This a complete 12-volume set, with each volume between 500 and 600 pages. Later bindings are still tight and text remarkably free from foxing, fading or other blemishes, BUT it is in places rather heavily underlined in pencil and/or ballpoint. This concerns maybe 1% of the text and does not impact its readability. See photos.
