First edition of this rare large-format Golden Age picture book, illustrated in loose and wild style by Ver Beck, a friend of Stephen Crane known for his comic animal drawings. In addition to her poetry and children's writing, Helen Hay (later Helen Hay Whitney) was an active philanthropist and racehorse breeder whose Greentree Stable produced winners of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. This title is in the same format as Jessie Willcox Smith's Bed Time Book, also written by Hay. Unusual in such condition. 11.5'' x 11.5''. Original pictorial boards with beige cloth spine. Illustrated with pictorial title spread and 13 full-page color plates by Ver Beck, plus illustrated borders in black and white. [36] pages. Mild rubbing and edgewear to boards. Light soil to spine cloth.
