Originally written anonymously in Ancona, Italy, in the early 14th century, this book is a collection of stories about St. Francis and his band of followers. The Latin original is lost; much of the material is attributed to a Brother Ugolino. Many other, unknown friars were no doubt responsible for the content of this book. Essentially, The Little Flowers of St. Francis of Assisi is a written compilation of an oral tradition. St. Francis had died in 1226, so these stories were passed on through several generations.
