Gilt lettering on front & spine, w/blind stamped border & gilt border on front cover, untrimmed fore edge & foot (deckle edge), top edge gilt. Portraits of subjects of essays: George Eliot, Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin, Wm. Gladstone, J.Turner, Jonathan Swift, Victor Hugo, Wm. Wordsworth, W. Thackeray, Charles Dickens, Oliver Goldsmith, and Shakespeare. Interior is in near fine to fine condition; exterior suede spine has some rubbing and tearing.
Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) founded his Roycroft Printing Shop in 1895 and created books treasured today for their craftsman style, fine bindings, handmade paper, and elaborately designed and decorated pages. Elbert and his wife, Alice were among the 1,198 passengers and crew who died aboard the S.S. Lusitania when it was torpedoed at the start of World War I.
