[xii]+210+[2](advertisements), frontispiece, plus 9 plates; orange/red cloth, spine lettered in black, lightly soiled and worn, with circular damp mark to upper board, the cloth slightly bubbled near top edges of upper board, top fore-corners a trifle bruised, spine quite faded; lower hinge cracking, outer leaves faintly offset, scattered light foxing; George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London, 1909. First edition, second binding state? *Goodacre, p. 461. *Short stories. The book is dedicated, 'with E. Nesbit's love', to Alice Hoatson - 'perhaps in secret token of their joint motherhood' [Briggs, A Woman of Passion, p. 294]. Alice Hoatson had two children with Hubert Bland, Edith Nesbit's husband. For many years she lived with the Blands as 'housekeeper and secretary', and her children were adopted by Nesbit and brought up as her own.
