A monumental compendium intended, according to the introduction, to provide the wording of the "Prayer Book used in the United States together with the Articles of Religion, compared with the proposed Boo of 1786 (never adopted) and with the English Prayer Book of 1662", with an eye toward the proposed revisions, sources, and its future. John William (J. W.) McGarvey (March 1, 1829 – October 6, 1911) was a minister, author, and religious educator in the American Restoration Movement. He served as the Sacred History Professor of the College of the Bible, the first full-fledged seminary associated with the Restoration Movement. The ideal of restoring a "primitive" form of Christianity grew in popularity in the US after the American Revolution. This desire to restore a purer form of Christianity played a role in the development of many groups during this period, known as the Second Great Awakening. The Restoration Movement began during, and was greatly influenced by, this second Awakening.
