Jenny escapes the fate of her Burmese mother and brother, drowned by invading Japanese troops, and her Father the English soldier, imprisoned. She is brought up by a Burmese family, who she marries into. The day her father, having been released, discovers she is alive, could have been a happy one. But the web of deceit woven by the English family she has never known pulls this "strange young girl - half frightened child, half grieving woman. . . half way round the globe, plunging her into an alien way of life which she had no heart to master.".
