Leavis's discussion of the nature of the English language and its value; and excellent first edition in its dust wrapper. A fascinating study of language and its value by literary critic F R Leavis. The first edition of 1975. In this volume, Leavis looks at the creative writer as a thinker, and emphasise the importance of an educated public who can question the sceptical idea that philosophical reflection starts as an irrelevance from the standpoint of a literary critic; a discussion that started in in an exchange with René Walker. In three parts, concerning 'Thought, Language, and Objectivity,' 'judgement and Analysis,' and 'Four Quartets.'With the price clipped dust wrapper.  In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally excellent with minor shelf wear only and only a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine. With a previous owner's inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1976. The dust wrapper is price clipped and very smart, with minor shelf wear only and some sunning to the spine, as well as some minor faint handling marks through. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Near Fine
