1866 1ed New York Stage American THEATER Actor Joseph Ireland James Hackett 2vThis major work on the early history of the American theatre chronicles more than a century of the plays presented at the various New York houses and the performers who appeared in them. According to the "Oxford Companion to American Theatre," author Joseph Ireland has "filled the book with numerous useful biographical sketches and other background information."Ireland devoted himself to the history of the stage producing two biographies of actors and notable American performances. He was excessively complimentary of various actors and much of his attention to their performances is noticeable in 'Records' – actors such as James Hackett. This 1866-67 edition of 'Records of the New York stage' is extremely rare known to be one of only 200 known copies, according to sources.Item number: #5354Price: $550IRELAND, Joseph NortonRecords of the New York stage, from 1750-1860New York: T.H. 1699 1ed Jeremey Collier Defense of Short View of English Theater Puritan PlaysJeremy Collier was a 17th-century English theater critic who, in 1698, wrote a highly controversial attack on English comedies. 'Short View of the Immorality and Profaneness of the English Stage' was filled with Collier's views on what he considered to be profanity and immorality in English plays. He believed plays should be providing moral encouragement, rather than encouraging unethical vices.
Immediately after Collier's 'Short View' was released, playwrights quickly responded with their own attacks on Collier's views. Naturally, Collier published his own defense of his 'Short View' which focused heavily on the content William Congreve's plays.
This 1699 first edition of 'Defense' is a fine printing of the literary war between Puritan restrictions and English dramatists!
