Sobre este artículo

London: William Heinemann, 1947. Jubilee. hardback. Signed numbered (939/1000) limited edition. Very good - red patterned heavy card boards with cream leather spine & gilt lettering in black panel to spine. d/j good but some bumping on top edges; foxing on inner endpapers, a little on uncut pages, otherwise clean and crisp. Designed by Stanley Morison at the Windmill Press Kingwood, Surrey.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Maugham's 1st novel. In the drab slums of Lambeth, eighteen-year-old Liza is the darling of Vere Street. Vibrant and bewitching, she is adored by the steady, loyal Tom. But then Liza meets Jim Blakeston, charming and worldy, new to the area, and married. Soon the streets are wise to their passionate affair and Liza's fall from grace is fast and fatal. Written while Maugham was a medical student, and his first published novel, Liza of Lambeth is a vividly realistic portrayal of working-class London life.

Sinopsis

Liza of Lambeth (1897) narrates Liza's last four months alive. She lives in a working-class area of London, and as the youngest of thirteen siblings she is left to look after their incompetent mother. She rejects a local suitor, but finds herself attracted to a mysterious stranger on a site-seeing trip. The novel gives insight into working-class London at the turn of the century.
