The first series is almost exclusively devoted to medical subjects, deriving from his apprenticeship with James Syme, and his acquiring of a large medical practice in Edinburgh. The second series contains one of the best-known of these include 'Rab and his Friends', a short story that became very popular in the 19th century, offering subtle insight into the how John Brown's teacher and employer, Doctor James Syme, taught and operated. The third series, as the title would suggest, focuses largely on caricaturist and illustrator John Leech, who is best known for his work for the political-satire magazine 'Punch', as well as Brown's thoughts of other creatives he had been fond of. All in full blue crushed morocco binding signed by Suttaby. Externally, in excellent condition with minor rubbing and bumping to the extremities.
