March 1, 1917, Boston, Mass. ; d. Sept. 12, 1977, NY, NY), the great grand-nephew of James Russell Lowell, was a technically masterful winner of the National Book Award (1959). This early collection prints "In the Cage" which expresses the ennui of his imprisonment for his conscientious objection during World War II.
