Sobre este artículo

Boston: Small, Maynard, 1901. Book. Good. Decorative Cloth. First Edition. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. Boston: Small, Maynard, 1901. First Edition. The first and only published work of Alice Bache Gould. A Bryn Mawr student, she became one of the few women of her time to pursue a university career, and obtained a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1889, a member of the first class. She did graduate work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Chicago, wrote her only published book, the biography of the naturalist Louis Agassiz in the Beacon Biographies Collection, and in World War I served as instructor in navigation at the Great Lakes Training Station in Chicago. In 1911, at age forty-three, she landed in Seville on her way to Italy. Although it was a pleasure trip, intellectual curiosity led her to visit the Archive of the Indies to learn the route Columbus had followed to Barbados, a subject she now knew well. Her traveling companion decided to return to the States, but for Alice Gould Spain was to be home for the rest of her days. Miss Gould's labors culminated in the most complete biographical record possible of Columbus' crew in the renowned Archive of the Indies. Alice Gould received many honors during her lifetime. In 1924, the Cross of Alfonso the Wise was bestowed on her. In 1942 she was named a corresponding member of the Spanish Royal Academy of History, now the custodian of her papers. In 1952 she was decorated with the highest honors of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, the woman she most admired. Her work was also recog- nized in the United States. Samuel Eliot Morison called it "the most important piece of original Columbian research yet done in the present century." The Agassiz biography is in good condition. Floral endpapers, antique library bookplate, hand-numbered and hand-dated, engraved vignette with protective tissue, 154 pp., rough-cut. Good..
