Book housed in its original black slipcase, with illustrated title to front panel. "Lysistrata" is a bawdy anti-war comedy by the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes, first staged in 411 BCE. It is the comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War, as Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands as a means of forcing the men to negotiate a peace. Some consider it his greatest work, and it is probably the most anthologized. Original gilt-pictorial full morocco, top edge gilt, others uncut; covers unevenly sunned (apparently an endemic problem with this edition); extremities rubbed and a trifle worn, with minor restoration to the spine ends; small light marks to the bottom margin of five consecutive pages; a very good copy. Number 26 from a privately-printed edition of only 200 copies on Zanders laid paper; the translation is by Johannes Minckwitz.
