What caused the discord in the Brooklyn Chess Club in 1870? Which Chicago players visited New York? Why was the Brooklyn Chess Club tournament controversial? What is the name of the café that opened its doors in 1870 and influenced chess in New York for almost a decade and who was victor in its first tournament? Mackenzie, Mason & Co offers the answers to these questions and to many more. Joost van Winsen delves deep into the history of New York chess in 1870. This book with 150 games, features not only the story of the leading masters of the metropolis, but also of neglected players.
