"Less than two years after completion, the dam in San Francisquito Canyon north of Los Angeles broke at midnight and took the lives of 450 persons and destroyed towns and orchards in the Santa Clara River valley. The history of this man-made tragedy was obscured for years, in large part because of concern over public relations by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
