Book Description: The future of the New York Metropolitan Region, or any other metropolitan area, is linked to its manufacturing. The New York Region as a whole has almost two million people working in manufacturing establishments, amounting to some 28 percent of the Region's total employment. Much more surprising is the fact that New York City itself, hardly renowned as an industrial center, employs nearly a million industrial workers. This book examines three of the Region's key industries, largely concentrated in the central city. Women's and Children's Apparel, Printing and Publishing, and Electronics were chosen because of their importance to the Region and the Region's importance to them. They are large, employing more than 500,000 people, and they depend to a striking degree on the existence of conditions that are found only in a large metropolitan concentration, particularly such a one as New York. Each conducts a large part of its business through face-to-face contact and each requires a widely diversified pool of special skill that can be tapped at need. Through these case histories the authors present in detail the dynamics of development and change in the country's greatest metropolitan region, and they identify the forces making for growth and those tending toward dispersal. The book includes projections through 1985.
