New York: The Magnet Office, 1843. First edition. Hardcover. Good. Two volume set, comprising the complete run of the periodical which includes volume 1, no 1 - 12, volume 2 no 1-12, and volume 3 no 1-3 running from May 1843 through September 1844. Volume 2 is titled "The New York Magnet: Designed to Illustrate the Philosophy of Human Nature, in its Physical, Intellectual and Moral Relations" and is attributed to Peter Peyton Good. Good assumed control of the journal after Sunderland went off on a lecture tour without warning. Bound into 1/2 red leather with marble boards. Volume 1 is taller than volume 2 measuring 28 x 17 cm vs. 24.5 x 17 cm. Boards are rubbed and worn. Scattered foxing. Previous owner's name stamps and inscriptions. Front cover hinge of volume one is partially cracked but binding is still holding. Uncommon work. Sunderland was a Methodist minister, abolitionist and had interest in many esoteric subjects such as mesmerism and phrenology as tools for explaining human psychology. This periodical touches on many esoteric areas including human and animal magnetism, clairvoyance, spiritualism, insanity, hypnotism and much more.
