Bermann's account of the Mahdist insurrection led by Mohammed Ahmed. Churchill wrote his second book, 'The River War', about this campaign. This work details the theocracy that the messianic Islamic leader Mohammed Ahmed led in central and northern Sudan in the final decades of the nineteenth century. With a tipped in leaf following the title page explaining that to avoid causing offence, 'the publishers desire to state that the claim of the Dervish Mohammed Ahmed to the sublime title of "The Mahdi of Allah" is not recognised by the author of this book'.From the library of Joseph Herbert Thorniley, former editor of "The Pioneer" Allahabad.
