Sobre este artículo

First (original 1965) edition, hardcover with illustrated dust jacket, black-and-white gravure illustrations with ochre-colored shorter text pages, 145 pp, 9.8 x 7.75 in., text in Polish, French, English and Russian by Janusz Korczak. Book in excellent condition, but dust jacket, in mylar protective cover, has 3 tears toward top edge and slight loss at bottom spine, else fine.

NOTE: THIS IS THE ORIGINAL 1965 FIRST EDITION (NOT A REPRINT).

Zofia Rydet's Mały Człowiek (Little Man) is one of the most famous Polish photobooks and is based on Rydet's first comprehensive series, which presents children through the sensibility of a concerned humanist documentarian. Taken between 1952 and 1963 during her travels to Albania, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia as well as in Poland, these photographs show children with the seriousness usually afforded to adults, and foreground their range of emotions and experiences in the world…

The pictures in this project were first the subject of a major exhibition, also titled Mały człowiek, in 1961, and first appeared as a book in 1965. Composed of black-and-white photographs, the publication features a varied design from spread to spread, including full-bleed pages, images juxtaposed with text and smaller snapshot-sized photographs set against white or black backgrounds…

The book is partly the creation of acclaimed graphic designer and architect Wojciech Zamecznik, who developed a design punctuated by graphic dot patterns of different sizes, especially notable on the cover. In addition to Rydet's photographs, the volume includes shorter bound-in vertical pages on tan paper stock with excerpts from texts by Janusz Korczak, a respected Polish educator and pedagogue who died during the Holocaust…—Paula Kupfer in What They Saw: Historical Photobooks by Women, 1843-1999.
