Blue cloth, backed in black linen, titled in gilt on fronts and spines, top edges gilt; plain endpapers; vol. I: xx,365pp; vol. II: [xii],299pp; vol. III: xii,384pp; with 62 photogravures, 62 color plates, and 149 uncolored halftone plates, complete. Bookplates of noted zoologist James G. Mead, Curator Emeritus of Marine Mammals at the Smithsonian Institution. A straight and sound set, cloth rubbed; generally clean and bright, though with occasional dampstains to upper margins of a few leaves, not affecting images: Very Good.
John Guille Millais (1865-1931), son of Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais, was a wildlife artist known for the exactness of his illustrations. This work features detailed illustrations of an enormous range of mammals, from dormice to whales. (Millais in fact spent time with an Atlantic whaling fleet studying the latter.) Though some of the illustrations are vaguely macabre, depicting furs and skins, most are lively and charming.
