Illustrator: Photographic. 350 g; 208 pages, illustrated throughout majority of black-and-white photographs, some colour plates, and some maps and line drawings. Includes appendix, of classification and check list of cetaceans, pinnipeds, and sirenians, a list of other species which visit the sea, a list of endangered species, and a glossary, select bibliography, and index. The colour illustrated dust jacket is badly torn and chipped, with loss on the bottom edge of both the front and rear panels. It is now protected. In this comprehensive survey all the known species are described, a large proportion in considerable detail. There are separate chapters dealing with the evolution and history of marine mammals, their status and distribution, their design and adaptation to their environment, their ecological role, their relations with prey and non-prey species, and in particular with their deadliest enemy -- man Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
