London: Published by the Author. Published by the Author, 1841 [c1892]. 2 vols. Original black cloth with gilt pictures of two horsemen with spears and gilt lettering on the covers and spines. Superb color plates (including maps, one folding). Only one previous edition was issued with printed color plates-the 1876 edition-although some previous copies had hand-colored plates. Catlin traveled extensively among the Indian tribes illustrating and describing their cultures in a classic account that has become one of the major sources for later knowledge about them. Provenance: Attractive bookplate of Freeman Ballard Shedd and signature dated 1899 in both volumes. Small chip at the head of the spine of Vol. I, both volumes Very Good. Howes C241. . Very Good.
