Chapel Hill North Carolina: University of North Carolina Press, 1937. First Edition, Limited. . Hardcover. Fine/Very Good +. F/NF/1st ed., limited to 750. Written in 1937, this book dispels the long held theory that these ruins that are found in several areas along the Georgia coast were ruins of Spanish missions built before Oglethrope's arrival. The first edition of this book was limited to 750 copies and most are in public libraries across the United States. Book Condition is Fine; navy cloth over boards with gold lettering on spine. 275pp. First Edition. Not a remainder or ex library. 275pp. End papers are maps showing location of the nineteenth century Sugar houses and some of the Spanish missions located down the Georgia coast. xii+436+[6] pages. Octavo (9" x 6") issued in green cloth with gilt lettering to spine and embossed decorative stamp to covers. Preface by W H Prescott. From the library of George M Foster. First British edition. She was— it is no exaggeration— Mexico's Tocqueville, but if that ploddingly perceptive Frenchman's Democracy in America is one great boiled sausage of seriousness, Calderón de la Barca's Life in Mexico is a confection as strange and marvelous as Mexico itself. Stranger still in matters of (if literary) haute cuisine: the author was Scottish, née Frances Erskine Inglis. She married the Spanish diplomat Angel Calderón de la Barca in 1838; one year later they sailed for Mexico, where he was to serve as Spain's first ambassador to its still very raw and violent ex-colony. Revolutions, earthquakes, exotic flowers and snow-capped volcanoes: rich ingredients for even the most burn-the-toast kind of chronicler. But Calderón de la Barca is shrewd and skilled as any novelist at stirring in the… Leer más

Descripción:
xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined… Leer más
