Gaines extraordinary (for the time) plans for a network of military railroads allowing strategic deployment of troops, with focus on movement of troops between western frontier forts. The map depicts US. Territory west of the Mississippi, including present day Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri, and extending north to Lake Superior. Lands occupied by Native Americans are denoted while various U.S. fortifications are indicated with red dots. The map is accompanied by Major Gaines report, plus related materials, comprising 58 pages overall. Both map and text (disbound from government publication) in exceptionally good clean condition. A desirable package combining map and report. .
