This, the third published catalogue listing maps and plans in the Public Record Office, describes many of the maps of the African continent known to be in custody of the Dept., plus material relating to Mauritius, Madagascar and other islands in the Indian and Atlantic oceans. Although many of these items were produced by or for the British govt., the catalog also describes maps published by foreign official agencies, plus original manuscript surveys made by explorers, engineers, etc. Documents listed date from the 19th and 20th centuries and illustrate European exploration of the African continent, military operations, boundary disputes, territorial claims, and activities of merchants, missionaries, miners, and settlers. 426 pages. Lists 3647 items, with brief descriptions of each. .
