Index. This is the story of a man described as America's greatest writer and wit. Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) at various times was a soldier, printer/publisher, journalist; lecturer, inventor, and river boat pilot as well as a novelist and humorist. This work contains more than 160 illustrations and help form a pictorial biography of Twain. In addition his family and friends are all represented and there are contemporary drawings of characters and scenes from his works. The author was very comfortable with the mid and late 19th century. His work on Walt Whitman won the American Book Award.
