1953. hard. See Photo Gallery Mary Lincoln Biography of a Marriage by Ruth Painter Randall -ORIGINAL EDITION- Publisher-Printing Location:Little, Brown and Company, Boston Date and Numbering: 1953 Size and Page Count: 5.5 X 8.5 Tall, approx. 399pages Condition: Good, binding good, pages intact and in good shape, no dust jacket ----An excellent opportunity for the collector, researcher or historian---- Contains: This is the biography of a marriage. As such, it gives information about Mary Lincoln as well as that of her husband. The goings on in the Lincoln Household as the young Lincoln and his aristocratic young lovely wife hook up and fall in love and are bombarded with life's situations. Review by Kirkusreviews A passionate defense of Mary Lincoln and a revelation-conclusively documented- of a marriage rooted in unremitting devotion and mutual love. Bit by bit the evidence is examined, the detractors (particularly Herndon, Lamon, Nicolay and Hay-and those who picked up and exaggerated and spread their claims) are analyzed, their unhappy personal relations with Mrs. Lincoln exposed, the slender threads of unsupported evidence broken. The result is an intimate closeup of the years of marriage in a piece of scholarly research-bearing out the subtitle Biography of a Marriage . We meet Lincoln, the uncouth and struggling young lawyer, self educated but lacking the social amenities; we meet Mary Todd, vivid, lively, gently reared, exceptionally well-educated for her day, and determined to marry where she found love and congeniality. We see the factors that operated to keep them apart- the truth of the broken engagement (no groom absent at the altar however)- the ultimate sudden marriage despite the opposition- the years of poverty and happiness despite sorrows-the in-law troubles, on both sides, and Lincoln's gradual forging ahead. Although this reader claims reasonable familiarity with the Lincoln story, this approach afforded, at every point, new and enlightening material, and carried the story through the tragedies of the administration, the successive shocks that intensified Mary Lincoln's instability and the cruel slanders that destroyed her years of widowhood. Not a straightforward biography this, but research, in which the reader goes along, step by step, with the scholar.

Beautifully written. Well documented with original letters and quotes. Details add to a greater understanding of why Mary had such difficult times in her life and how Lincoln understood, loved and supported her. Great incites into Lincoln's gifts and challenges as well.

Sobre The Franklin Bookstore

The Franklin Bookstore began in 1996 by Robert & Ruth Lynn in Humboldt, Tennessee. Retiring from the Navy and a business career and always a history buff, Robert and Ruth opened the business of selling and dealing with rare books, magazines and newspapers. Many items were acquired from other rare books dealers from across the country. The Franklin Bookstore continues with his offspring mindful to keep the high ethical business examples that Dad established. We feel honored to be associated with such a virtual history of the printed word, inherently beautiful and fascinating artifacts of our cultural past. Every item we offer is guaranteed to be absolutely genuine and as described. A large part of the inventory is periodicals that date from the Revolutionary War to World War II and into the 21 century.
