Angus & Robertson, Sydney, 1957. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Good. Dark red coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper red and white coloured titles to the front panel and red and black coloured titles to the backstrip. Set in the isolated goldmining town Charleston on the west coast of New Zealand in the 1870s. Mary Black and her young son Christopher were left in the town after tragic circumstances. They found solace Mary Smith and the hotel that she ran. It was the miners who took the place of Christopher's father, but, it was Mary Smith who became his mother when his own remarried and left New Zealand. Minor rubbing of the book edges with light tanning of the text block edges. Age toning of the pages. The half title page has become a little crease closest to the hinge. Faint offset tanning to the end pages. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels with a couple of small tears to the top dustwrapper edge. Some fading of the back strip.
