First American edition. Verga's last major work of fiction, originally appearing in 1888. Lawrence writes, "Basing their judgement on the two novels, I Malavoglio and Mastro-don Gerualdo, together with the books of Sicilian sketches, practically all serious critic regard Giovanni Verga as the greatest of Italian writers of fiction; always excepting Manzoni.
