Sobre este artículo

New York: Didier, 1949. Hardcover. 8vo. Burgundy paper over boards with pale blue lettering. 287pp. Line drawings. Very good. A tight and nice first U.S. edition of this comic novel featuring Jeeves and Bertie Wooster -- with two fine autograph additions from a 1951 screwball comedy of the same name that may/may not bear any connection! Tipped to inner flyleaf is a fine Inscribed Photograph Signed (likely a book illustration) of the film's star GENE TIERNEY (1920-91, who plays Maggie Carleton McNulty), a sultry black-and-white come-hither head-and-shoulders portrait boldly inscribed and signed in blue fineline in a light area at upper right: "To Terry / with best / wishes / Gene Tierney." Opposite this is a fine heavy stock 4¼" X 3" card boldly signed in black ballpoint by BILLIE BIRD (1908-2002, who plays Mugsy), who also dates it 14 December 1986 at upper right. The relationship between this 1949 comic novel and the 1951 screwball comedy of the same name is unclear.

Sinopsis

'You don't analyse such sunlit perfection, you just bask in its warmth and splendour.' Stephen Fry A Jeeves and Wooster novelAt Deverill Hall, an idyllic Tudor manor in the picture-perfect village of King's Deverill, impostors are in the air. The prime example is man-about-town Bertie Wooster, doing a good turn to Gussie Fink-Nottle by impersonating him while he enjoys fourteen days away from society after being caught taking an unscheduled dip in the fountains of Trafalgar Square. Bertie is of course one of nature's gentlemen, but the stakes are high: if all is revealed, there's a danger that Gussie's simpering fiancee Madeline may turn her wide eyes on Bertie instead. It's a brilliant plan – until Gussie himself turns up, imitating Bertram Wooster. After that, only the massive brain of Jeeves (himself in disguise) can set things right.
