London: Humphreys, 1912. Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Published in 1912 by Arthur L. Humphreys. First Thus, near fine condition. In fine deep red leather, all edges gilt. With red ribbon page marker. Laid paper. Printed in French on verso pages, with English translation on recto pages. Appears unread. Textblock is tight, pages are bright with no foxing Beautiful binding of full red leather, gilt stamped and blind stamped with trefoils, with title and author gilt stamped on front cover. Spine has five raised bands with gilt title and gilt tooling. Binding on front inside cover bears a gilt stamped "Hatchards 187 Picadilly". Hatchards was formed in 1797 and continues in business today. It is a bookseller to the Royal Households, and is London's oldest bookshop. Corners have slight rubbing, Very slight rubbing to cover edges. Faint scuff on front cover. See photos. Bears two bookplates. On the front pastedown is a bookplate for "Castle Gould". On the front free endpaper is a bookplate for "Howard Gould". Howard Gould was a financier and son of Jay Gould, the railroad magnate. The bookplate "Castle Gould" depicts the home Howard Gould built in the early 1900's and is an exact copy of Kilkenny Castle in Ireland. There is a penciled "H.G." on front pastedown, very probably in the hand of Howard Gould.
