Cambridge at the University Press, 1932. Illustrated, large octavo, pp xxii, 365, clean internally, cloth slightly worn and marked, [From the library of Sir John Burnett, with his signature on the front endpaper. A distinguished academic career and a lifelong interest in fungi, botany and nature conservation made him the ideal champion for biological recording in the UK. He held that effective nature conservation could be achieved only if good quality information about species and their habitats was accessible to all who needed it - a belief that made him perfectly suited to run the National Biodiversity Network, founded in 2000. He was convinced that academics with high administrative posts must continue with some personal research, in his case on the myxomycetes.] . First Edition. Cloth. Good.

Descripción:
New York: Macmillan, 1932. First American Printing. Hardcover. Very good. Small quarto, red cloth, very good, no jacket, light wear. 365 pp, illustrated. In his 1932 book on The Mechanism of Creative Evolution, Hurst adopted the chromosome theory of inheritance whole-heartedly referring copiously to Thomas Hunt Morgan's Drosophila work, and he was also clearly a staunch Darwinist. He believed that natural selection and Mendelian genetics were compatible, and referred to the theoretical work of Sewall Wright, R.A. Fisher, and J.B.S. Haldane, which proved that quantitative traits and natural selection were compatible with Mendelism.

Hurst, providing a detailed account of 'Creative Evolution'. The first edition of English geneticist Charles Chamberlain Hurst's 1932 illustrated study of evolution. Hurst was famous for his work on hybridisation and breeding in orchids, but also for carrying out early studies into eye colour genetics - demonstrating the dominance of brown eyes over blue in 1905 - and animal coat coloration.Stating in his preface that 'the time seems to be ripe for a gathering together of the multitudinous facts which go to make up the genetical story of creative evolution', this work is populated with numerous photographic and illustrated vignettes and plates.
