Inscribed at foot of title: 'To Hyett Esq / with author's compliments'.

Pages 153-59 contain an account of Clark's visit to the Hopital Necker in Paris, with a detailed discussion of the use of the stethoscope introduced by Laennec. René Laennec invented the stethoscope in 1816 at the Hopital Necker.

Hyett (1795-1877), went on the Grand Tour and possibly met Clark on his travels.
